Is Hydrogen Water Good For You?
Water is awesome! So we all thought it couldn’t get any better, right? But then came electrolyte water and alkaline water to help with hydration. Now we get hydrogen water and, of course, the question: “Is hydrogen water good for you?”. Limited trials offer evidence that backs some claims about hydrogen water. However, the small sample size also makes them somewhat inconclusive. Today we’ll look at it from various angles to establish our own thoughts and interpretations. This will help us consider whether hydrogen water is a good investment. So let’s break down the molecular hydrogen molecule and its benefits when infused to create hydrogen water.
What is it?
First let’s start with the hydrogen molecule. Molecular hydrogen is a colorless, odorless, non-toxic gas. It easily binds with other elements like oxygen, nitrogen and carbon to form many various compounds, including water.
Water molecules consist of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. Some believe that infusing water with additional hydrogen atoms can produce benefits that regular water cannot.
Hydrogen water is pretty much regular water with extra hydrogen gas molecules dissolved into it. It doesn’t alter the pH or change the structure of the water molecule in any way.
Interestingly, hydrogen water has been popular in Japan for many years and is known as the “Shin’nooru solution”. It is believe that by ingesting the hydrogen gas, it acts as an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. In theory, a portion of the hydrogen molecule carries antioxidant activity against those nasty free radicals we all know about. The Japanese are so sold on this concept that ready-to-drink products and at-home hydrogen water machines have been available in the country for years! I’ve recently started to see the installation of many of these hydrogen water machines here in Los Angeles, too.
Hydrogen Water Vs. Alkaline Water
Hydrogen rich water is not the same as alkaline water. Alkaline water has high mineralization and its pH is above 8. Although it can help neutralize acids in the body, alkaline water does not address the main cause of concern, which is oxidation.
OXIDATION is a main cause of ACIDIFICATION within the body.
Hydrogen-rich water is an antioxidant and it prevents oxidation to avoid acidification. With a pH of 7-7.5 and weak mineralization, you get the benefits of both the alkalizing water and hydrogen water.
A Tiny Molecule
The molecular hydrogen molecule is the smallest size molecule that exists in the universe. Consequently, this particular element easily diffuses into other materials. For us, that means it can penetrate into cell walls to perform its antioxidant powers better than any other antioxidant! This brings us to the benefits of hydrogen infused water.
So, what is hydrogen water good for? According to some resources, adding hydrogen gas to the water increases its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Proponents of hydrogen water claim that drinking hydrogen water can help:
- Improve Athletic Performance
- Increase Energy
- Reduce Inflammation
- Improve Recovery (i.e., quicker recovery times after workouts)
- Slow the aging process (Including the effects on your skin)
There are multiple animal studies and a few human studies that have been conducted, mostly in Japan. Their results suggest that benefits of hydrogen-infused water may include acting as an antioxidant and helping reduce inflammation. In fact, Japan’s Ministry of Health has approved hydrogen-infused saline IVs to help people recovering from infections and other conditions. Bathing in hydrogen water is also becoming a popular spa treatment for fighting wrinkles and skin damage!
In the United States Dr. Nicholas Perricone focuses on hydrogen’s effect on energy, which is based on his own small study of 20 people. He measured energy changes in skin cells after people drank 16 ounces of Dr. Perricone Hydrogen Water. Subsequently, his results indicated that people who drank it seemed to have increased activity in the energy-producing enzymes in the cells.
All the above conclusions are based on the concept that antioxidants help prevent oxidative stress.
What is Oxidative Stress?
Oxidative Stress is a phenomenon caused by an imbalance between:
– Production & accumulation of oxygen-reactive compounds in cells and tissues
– Ability of a biological system to detoxify these reactive products.
Oxidative stress comes from natural bodily process and exposure to the sun. However, it is greatly accelerated by pollutants, smoking and processed foods. It can damage cells, which consequently leads to premature aging and diseases like cancer.
If you’re wondering where to get hydrogen water, then you’re in the right place. You can get DrinkHRW tablets delivered to your door by using the link below. (Don’t forget to use our code to save!) But of course, you may find hydrogen water at your local supermarket. You’ll also likely notice the sparkling, alkaline and electrolyte infused options becoming more and more prevalent. Hydrogen water is one of the newest additions to this list. There are manufacturers who sell hydrogen water bottled with the gas already added to it. Although, some of those options are quite expensive and certainly unnecessary.
Drop one tablet into a glass of water to add the gas. Wait for the bubbles, then consume it as soon as possible to ingest the maximum amount of hydrogen. Since hydrogen is a gas, just like carbonated water with carbon dioxide gas, it quickly dissipates out of the water. What I’m getting at is: the more shaking and stirring, the faster the gas will leave. So to maximize your intake by drinking it as soon as the tablet dissolves.
We started by asking “Is hydrogen water good for you?”. From what I have read and my experience with Drink HRW’s hydrogen water so far: I dig it. The product is not expensive at all, and I generally have been feeling better whilst consistently infusing my water. I’ll let you know if anything changes, but for now I’ll continue to take 1 or 2 tablets a day .
