Is there a food-brain aging connection?

Just like eating for your cardiovascular health and gut health, there is a big correlation between the foods that we eat and the impact those foods can have on the structure and the health of our brains. The brain is an energy consuming organ that uses approximately 110 calories per pound, per day. Since the average adult brain weighs about 3 pounds, it burns roughly 330 calories daily. Amazingly, this equates to approximately 20% of our energy resources! So it is fair to say that the brain needs plenty of ‘good fuel’ in order to maintain its proper functions and stay sharp throughout the day.

What types of foods boost brain health and slow brain aging?

There are certain nutrients that can help maintain a healthy brain. Omega-3 fatty acids help build and repair brain cells while antioxidants help reduce cellular stress and inflammation, which are linked to brain aging and neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. The rates of these diseases are increasing dramatically in our aging population, so we should take actions now in order to avoid adding to the statistics.

Foods for Brain Boosting

Have you ever experienced extreme fatigue after eating a large bowl of pasta? How about alertness late at night after a protein rich meal? All of these unordinary behaviors could simply be the effects of food on your brain. The complex combinations of compounds in food can stimulate brain cells to release mood altering norepinephrine, dopamine and seretonin. We will cover all this throughout the post.

The nutritional content of of your brain (excluding the moisture) comes primarily from fats. In the remaining brain matter, you find proteins / amino acids, micronutrients and glucose. Each element has a distinct impact on the functioning, development, mood and our overall energy levels. Keeping this in mind, here is an overview of foods that are good for the brain.

The superstar FATS for your brain are omega-3 and omega-6, which are found in nuts, seeds and fatty fish. These fats are crucial to the maintenance of cellular membranes and have been linked to preventing degenerative brain conditions.

However, the long term consumption of other fats such as trans and saturated fats, margarine, processed foods, palm oil etc, may have alternative effects and compromise your brain health.

Protein

The building block nutrients know as PROTEIN, AKA Amino Acids, are responsible for growth and development and can also manipulate how we feel and behave. They can do this because they contain the precursors to our neurotransmitters; the chemical messengers that carry signals between neurons affecting things like mood, sleep, attentiveness and weight. They’re one of the reasons we might feel calm after eating pasta or more alert after a protein rich meal. Our brains also benefit from a steady supply of MICRONUTRIENTS that can be found in most fruits and vegetables. Our frontal lobes are so sensitive to drops in glucose that a change in mental function is one of the primary signals of nutrient deficiency.
